A Ward County Jail inmate is charged with breaking another inmate jaw in two places on Feb. 2 during a fight over ramen noodles.
Jesse Levi Jones, 32, Kenmare, is charged with aggravated assault, a Class C felony carrying a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Jones made an initial appearance in district court in Minot this week.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Jones got into a dispute with David Paul Pieper Jr.,
26, on the night of Feb. 2. Pieper was unable to speak after the incident but wrote out an account for law enforcement. Pieper wrote that he was missing seven ramen noodle packages and his bowl. Pieper believed that Jones had his ramen noodles and was in his cell asking about it and that was when Jones became aggressive with him. Security footage shows Jones punching Pieper. Pieper was taken to Trinity Hospital for treatment of his injuries and then returned to the Ward County Jail on Feb. 3.
In an unrelated case, Jones was also charged with violation of a protection order, a Class A misdemeanor, in district court in Minot in January. He was charged with Class A misdemeanor simple assault in December 2017.
On Dec. 5, 2017, Pieper was sentenced to 90 days in jail for unlawful entry into a motor vehicle. He was also charged in January with two counts of Class C felony possession of a controlled substance and Class A misdemeanor driving with a suspended license.
