TRAVERSE CITY Back to school shopping lists can add up fast, and so can the price tag that goes along with them.
Father Fred Foundation officials are seeking cash donations to provide gift cards for new shoes to help make a dent in families’ back to school bills.
“We try to help families out when the kids go back to school because it can be a very expensive time between school supplies and clothing,” Executive Director Deb Haase said.
Haase said the group settled on a fundraiser for shoes because it is something growing children need, and a new pair of shoes can help a child feel confident among their peers.
“When kids go to school feeling good about themselves they’re more open to learning,
” she said. “If they’re going to school feeling like everybody’s looking at their shoes, that makes them insecure and that affects learning.”
The foundation raised about $6,600 for the program last summer and spent about $8,400. More than 400 area children received a gift card toward new footwear,
and Haase anticipates this year’s need will be about the same.
