Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, meaning your system only soaks up what it needs and then flushes out any extra. Because of this, vitamin C is relatively safe at doses well above your recommendation. However, if you take a megadose of the vitamin, you may wind up suffering from several uncomfortable side effects.

Why You Need Vitamin C Vitamin C is often portrayed as an immune boosting nutrient, but it is actually essential for your overall health, not just your immune system. You need vitamin C to produce new collagen, a connective tissue that provides elasticity in your skin and aids in wound healing. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, fighting off free radicals that damage cells and tissues. When free radicals build up in your system, you increase your chances of developing chronic diseases, including certain types of cancer. Vitamin C also allows your body to absorb plant based iron, called non heme iron, and plays a role in metabolizing protein.

Recommendation vs. Unsafe Level Vitamin C recommendation varies by gender. Men need 90 milligrams per day while women require 75 daily milligrams, reports the Office of Dietary Supplements. During pregnancy and while breast feeding, women need 85 milligrams and 120 milligrams, respectively. Additionally, if you smoke, you’ll have to get another 35 milligrams above your recommendation. You can safely ingest much more without serious complications, but you should limit your intake to less than 2,000 milligrams. Whether you take one large dose or several smaller doses throughout the day, going above this amount may lead to problems.

Minor Negative Effects Vitamin C is unlikely to cause major health problems if you are generally healthy, even if you take a massive dose well above 100 percent of the daily value of the vitamin. However, since your system will try to flush the excess vitamin C out of your gut, you’ll experience gastrointestinal issues. Severe abdominal cramping, bloating, diarrhea and nausea may occur after taking a mega dose of vitamin C.

More Serious Problems It is possible to have more serious health implications from large doses of vitamin C up to 10,000 milligrams, although research is inconclusive. When you ingest large quantities of the vitamin, your body absorbs more non heme iron from plant foods, possibly elevating iron levels in your system. You may be prone to suffering from oxalate kidney stones as well, if you continuously take large doses of vitamin C. Massive doses might even lead to birth defects, decreased antioxidant capabilities and low levels of vitamin B 12, reports the Linus Pauling Institute. It is important to note that these side effects occurred in a small number of people described in independent case reports. Further research is needed to show if these issues were directly related to the megadose of vitamin C or from an underlying health issue.

Drug Interactions Taking large amounts of vitamin C may interact with some of your prescription medications. If you take a blood thinner or anticoagulant medication, vitamin C can inhibit its function. Your doctor may need to increase the dose of your medication to maximize its potential. Your physician can evaluate how much vitamin C you’re getting and determine whether you need to change your prescriptions. “Workplaces are evolving and so are office attire trends,” said Robert Half senior executive director Paul McDonald. “Employees often prefer more relaxed attire, and having a casual dress code can be an enticement when recruiting finance and accounting professionals.”

Relaxing dress codes aren an excuse for employees and job seekers to wear whatever they want to work or an interview. Robert Half offers tips for dressing appropriately in today business environment:

Look to the next rung. What does your boss and your boss boss wear? Take inspiration from upper management style and formality. Set yourself up for success by dressing for the job you want.

Keep it tidy. Even if you can wear jeans and T shirts to work, ensure they clean and wrinkle free.

Don forget the details. A dress code encompasses an employee total appearance. Pay as much attention to your accessories and grooming as you do your clothing.

Play it safe when meeting with hiring managers. Don risk making a poor first impression with clothes that are too casual. Women should wear a blazer or business appropriate dress and closed toe shoes with a low heel. Men fare best in a suit or jacket and tie.

Dress for your day. If you unclear of your organization guidelines, consult the employee handbook or human resources department. Consider keeping a jacket in your office should your day unexpectedly change.

McDonald offered a few additional tips: “For employees, if you not sure what appropriate to wear for a particular situation, talk to your manager. For job seekers preparing for interviews, tap your network or check out the employers social media activity for insights on the company corporate culture. If you still uncertain of what to wear, err on the formal side.”

Apples are full of nutrients that keep your body healthy and promote digestion. Red Delicious apples have a mild flavor and soft texture, making them ideal for baking. Fuji and Gala apples have a crisp texture and sweet taste. If you prefer a tart apple, opt for Granny Smith or McIntosh apples. All varieties of apples have about the same nutritional content, so the type you select depends on your taste preference.

Vitamin C Enjoying a 3 inch medium apple provides around 10 percent of your daily vitamin C requirement. Even though vitamin C is an immune system booster, it has several other roles in your body. Vitamin C is one of several types of antioxidants that neutralize damaging free radicals. When free radicals scavenge through your system, they feed on strong healthy cells, which increases your risk of illness. Consuming antioxidant , vitamin C rich foods like apples protects cells and helps lower your risk of chronic disease. Vitamin C also plays a role is making collagen. You need collagen to aid in wound healing and to keep your skin healthy. Women need 75 milligrams of daily vitamin C, while men should get 90 milligrams, says the Office of Dietary Supplements. Having a 3 inch apple provides approximately 9 milligrams of vitamin C.

Carbohydrates Apples are rich in carbohydrates and virtually all of the calories in apples come from carbs. Your diet should have a high percentage of carbohydrates because this macronutrient breaks down into glucose, the main source of fuel for every cell in your body. Apples provide mainly simple carbohydrates in the form of fructose, or fruit sugar. Simple carbohydrates break down quickly in your gut and provide immediate fuel. Between 45 and 65 percent of your total calories should come from carbohydrates, which have 4 calories per gram, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 reports. If you normally consume about 1,800 calories from your daily diet, you need 202 to 292 grams each day. A medium 3 inch apple has about 25 total grams of carbohydrates.

Fiber Snacking on an apple sneaks a high amount of fiber into your diet. The soft inside part of apples provides soluble fiber, while the tough outer skin is insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber binds with water and slows digestion. Insoluble fiber stays intact and pushes out waste, making your stools soft and keeping you regular. Both fibers are equally important in your diet and usually fiber rich foods have a small amount of each. Based on an 1,800 calorie diet, you should get 25 grams of daily fiber because you need 14 grams for every 1,000 calories in your diet, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010. Apples have about 4.5 grams of combined fiber for a medium 3 inch fruit.

Potassium Enjoying an apple a day helps maintain a normal heart rhythm by increasing your potassium intake. Potassium, known as an electrolyte, is a mineral that dissolves in cellular fluid and helps electricity flow through your body. Most potassium in your body is found inside of cells, but it crosses cell walls if it needs to in order to keep fluid steady in and around cells. This process, known as the membrane potential, is heavily regulated by your body in order to sustain steady electrical flow for heart rhythm as well as muscle contraction. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, you need 4,700 milligrams of potassium from your daily diet and one medium 3 inch apple offers nearly 200 milligrams. “Our school uniform is too strict. I don’t see how you can distract people from their learning by wearing patterned socks or skirts higher than the knee. It’s ridiculous!”

Millie, 12, Coventry, England

“I’m not happy with my uniform! It’s not right for me. I look horrible. Why can’t we wear home clothes? I really hate black shoes, that make me look so dumb for school.”

Liban, 13, Bristol, England

“I hate my school uniform, it’s mostly black and it’s really boring and I hate having to wear a school tie.”

Heather, 14, Moray, Scotland

“My uniform is OK I guess, but my jumper is a bit dull because it’s just grey, and it’s easy to get holes in.”

“I love our school uniform, it is red and white!”

“I don’t like trousers”

Ellie, 7, Derbyshire, England

“At my school we have to have our blazers on even in summer, with our ties perfect and top button done up even though it chokes us a bit. We have good school trips though I’m going on a four day trip to France on the 19th of June with NO SCHOOL UNIFORM!””We have a grey blazer with a badge and grey trousers and we can wear short trousers if we want and long grey socks. “Well, I quite like my school uniform.”

Sam, 9, Sussex, England

“I think school uniform is stupid we all look the same, we are not in the army! Schools and parents tell us to be creative and be ourselves and we can’t with school uniform. I understand if we are singing or going on a field trip, but some uniforms are so uncool and uncomfortable and girls should be allowed to wear trousers too. The short ban is stupid and discriminates against boys, they will be boiling in trousers on hot days!”

Aimee, 12, Northumberland, England

“We don’t have a school uniform however we have a really annoying dress code: no leggings, no skirts above the knee or short sleeved tops. It’s so annoying as we get sent home to change if we don’t wear the right thing!”

Ada, 12, London, England

“I hate my school uniform, I wish we could just wear normal clothes to school. It would be so cool! I am going to suggest this at my school!”

Anya , 11, Durham, England

“My school uniform is a navy jumper for KS4 and light blue for year 7 and 8. I think it’s OK but we have to wear a logo polo shirt even though no one can see it, we even have a PE uniform! Everything is really expensive and we are not allowed to wear long sleeved t shirts under our polo shirts. I think that’s unfair because I don’t like having my arms uncovered when I don’t want to keep my jumper on. Non school uniform days have been pretty much banned now because it’s meant to be too distracting.”

Wear a sport jacket: Pair a jacket with slacks or properly fitting, dark wash jeans in a straight cut.

Vest side: Consider wearing a vest. Just make sure it buttons comfortably.

Go black: Black shoes match everything. Pick narrow toe (not round) slip ons or lace ups.

Add blue: When wearing a suit, pair it with either a blue shirt or a blue tie.

Stand up straight: Slouching will get you nowhere career wise, date wise and respect wise.

Kendall Qualls was so appalled that he took a photo of the man, dining in a nice restaurant. A VPL (visible panty line) had nothing on this man’s VPC (visible plumber’s crack).

“I’ve seen enough underwear by now, and man, it’s killing me. The involuntary exposure is not a pretty sight,” Qualls says. “I’m sad that I have to say it, but it happens too frequently: Wear a belt.”

That’s his first piece of advice for the modern American man.

He also thinks every man should own a navy blue blazer and a collared shirt, either a polo or dress shirt.

These aren’t revolutionary ideas, but they are far from commonplace in today’s society, says Qualls, of Erie. He says the degeneration in the American man’s attire is directly linked with the decline in chivalry, manners and, well, self respect. He’s working on a book about this topic, “Man up and Dress Up: Reviving American Masculinity and Chivalry.”

“It’s starkingly embarrassing for American men. We need to sharpen this up,” Qualls says.

“Man Up” will identify some of the common concerns about how men look and act and provide specific solutions that any man can implement to transform his life, and that of the women around him, Qualls says.

Multiple studies have shown women aren’t impressed with how men treat them these days. One study, by Scaramouche Fandango, found 61 percent of women polled preferred the image of a man in the ’50s to young men of today, in large part because of their manners.

That’s not to say we should regress to the ’50s and remove women from the workforce, Qualls says.

“But just because women have advanced doesn’t mean we’re off the hook” and can let it all go, Qualls says.

Qualls says his campaign has nothing to do with socio economic lines; hyper casual dress of the typical American male a T shirt and baggy jeans spans age, income and is not just relegated to notoriously relaxed Colorado.

“They don’t know any better,” he says. “Believe me, it’s not being rude. The culture reinforces this. What has happened to the guys?”.

Taking a stroll through the park in front of our house the other evening; Suzanne, the “Rude Dog” (also known by his former racing name “Majic Rubin,” his adoptive name “Rubin,” and the diminutive “Roo Dog”) and I were discussing potential topics for this space.

I considered talking about the importance of family, but that’s one I’ve touched on a more frequent basis as my father became more frail. Diet was pretty much out of the question; I like beer, I tend to eat most any food substance that fails to pre emptively sink its teeth into me. is so much more skilled than I at writing about good stuff.

Shoes? Haven’t done that topic in a while. Books? The latest stuff I’ve read I’ve talked about.

“What is the longest run I need to do?” Run as long as you can get away with, at a pace which is comfortable for you. Not easy, but comfortable. The maximum distance ideally should be no more than one fourth of the week’s total distance, or longer than 2 hours, 30 minutes in duration.

“But I’m doing a ten mile ‘mud run.'” Sounds like the kind of event where sustained running is NOT going to happen. In fact, unless you’re at the front of the wave with the intent to make like a special operations trainee, I’d be comfortable with runs in the five to six mile range. Seven at the most. And most likely the finish time is a secondary thing; participation without major injury seems to me to be the primary.

“I was thinking about a pair of those ‘finger shoes.'” For the kind of terrain, or the lack of, footwear that’s minimalist (less shoe to me equals less space for mud, water and debris) would be acceptable. It’s probably the only time I’d even think of taking the “skele toes” I save for weight machine workouts at the gym on anything which resembles a run. In my humble opinion, too many folks look to the newest 150 dollar offering from the legion of shoe manufacturers (call them legion, for they are many.) to make them “better runners.”

There are 10 kids in all for Jason and Chapri Paulateer, who after having a few children of their own knew there was yet room for more in their hearts, and their home.

Their story is one that we all should hear; it’s a story that will fill you to the brim with Christmas cheer.

PHOTOS: Big family, big Christmas

They’ll run down the stairs of their Bloomfield Township home this morning 20 feet in footie pajamas, some tinier than others rushing to see what Santa has brought.

It’s usually one gift per child, plus what’s in their stockings. Santa has lots to deliver to the Paulateers, whose children range in age from 1 to 18 years old.

A couple weeks before Christmas, Mekhi, 12, showed his dad a pair of socks he’d like, plus a pair of Nike Hyperdunk shoes, wireless earphones and pants with cuffs on the bottom.

But it’s not easy to come up with all the things on their wish lists.

“Those are nice,” their dad, Jason, said, before explaining that he and his wife, Chapri, never thought they would be the parents of 10 children when they were first married.

“We started out as foster parents with the intent to adopt,” he said. But as more and more children came into their care, the family simply adjusted. “It was manageable. We always just kinda went with the flow even the hard stuff. It like, OK, these are things you just have to go through. And we just plow through it.”

Four of their kids have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD. One is on the autism spectrum. One struggles with Oppositional Defiance Disorder. All of them are loved.

Growing a family

Their family’s story started on the west side of the state.

Jason, who grew up in Detroit, met Chapri, also a Detroit native, at Grand Valley State University.

The Paulateer family poses for a photo on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016. The family is made up of ten children, seven of which are adopted. (Rachel Woolf, Special to the Detroit Free Press)

They graduated him with two degrees in business, her with a degree in criminal justice and were married. Soon after, Chapri delivered a baby boy they named Jason Paulateer Jr. But about a month after he was born, baby Jason died.

“The official cause of death was an enlarged heart,” Chapri said. “His heart was four times the normal size,

and we had no idea.

“I wouldn wish that on anybody, but I think we are the people we are today because of that. And I don doubt God. It not my place to question Him. I feel like we might not always understand what we are supposed to trust, right? So you know, we made it through it.”

Soon after they lost their son, Chapri was pregnant again this time, with a girl, Micha. A year later came a second daughter, Michaila. And then, a third, Michaya, was born. The Paulateers were pretty certain they were done having children, but Chapri felt as if the family wasn’t complete. She wanted a son.

Adoption, Jason said, “was on her bucket list, not mine. . She and another mom came up with this plan to actually do something about it.

“I ended up agreeing to attend the orientation to learn about this whole thing with her, being a supportive spouse,” he said. “And it was a wrap. . I graduated from being a reluctant spouse to being all in.”

They enrolled in a 13 week class to help them understand the process of foster care and adoption.

“One thing led to another,” he said.

One day, Chapri went to lunch with a friend who worked in adoptions; the friend showed her the picture of two brothers who were in foster care, but who needed a permanent home.

Chapri couldn’t stop thinking about those boys, who at the time were 4 and 5.

“For two weeks, I dreamed about those boys,” Chapri said. “All the time, they were on my mind. I told my husband, ‘Honey, I can get those boys out of my mind.’ He said, ‘You should call the agency and see if their parental rights have been terminated.’ “
